Have you ever noticed how so many recreational areas are built around waterfalls? There is just something about the sound of water flowing and cascading from up above to a pool, or river below. The exhileration of the mist as it touches our skin if we dare get close enough.
In this waterfall photo gallery there are samples of many pictures of waterfalls. Each thumbnail is clickable. And best of all without leaving the page. Simply click one and in the larger image area you will have access to "next" and "previous" buttons. Browse through and enjoy your favorites.
It isn't often that one has the opportunity to live close to many parks that are built around waterfalls. I am one of those lucky ones. We live not far from Matheson Park in Illinois.
And so it would seem only natural to make the two hour drive for an afternoon visit. Walking around the trails and paths was a dream come true. It was like coming home. Notice that last picture in this row?

You should have seen the path to get there. I was sure I would fall off the rocks used to cross that stream. But I survived and boy was it ever worth it. The view is breathtaking.
The middle picture is one taken by Michelle my niece while visiting Blackwater Falls in West Virginia. This is where that lucky me part comes in. You see I grew up in WV so having beautiful hills and parks to play in have always been part of my life.
Where did you grow up? I would love to share stories and pictures. We all have a little Huckleberry in us. Come on! You know you want to tell...
Waterfalls attract us no matter what their size. You can even buy them for your home and garden. It is said that the sound of running water is very soothing.
I wonder though are we soothed by the fountains we bring inside. Or are we actually enjoying a memory of the love of nature brought from our past? Isn't it amazing how the body really doesn't know the difference? The key is feeling good.

Speaking of memories, this first picture was sent in by Dodie McCandless. The family had a wonderful fun day camping near this waterfall.
And finally in this set are two pictures taken at Niagra Falls. If you have not had a chance to visit Niagra Falls yet, I highly recommend it. This Maid of the Mist picture is one I took when we finally made our way to the falls in September. We were going to visit last year but the weather was just too bad at the time we had the idea. This year a little more determination made the visit that much more rewarding.
Though we only spent a few hours walking around the park there was just one waterfall picture opportunity followed by another. Just think of these two as a tease. I promise I will be sharing more Niagra pictures soon. There is just something fascinating about the movement of water, don't you think?
