We Have a Winner! - Peruvian Daffodil
by: Sally

Often is one simple comment that will give me the answer we are looking for. Thank you for that name. I did a search on Peruvian Daffodil and indeed this appears to be our Winner!

The Peruvian Daffodil is also known as a spider lily. One look at the trumpet shaped daffodil like flower reveals why. And the six long spidery fingers that circle the inner flower explains the nick name spider lily.

This fragrant flower blooms around mid summer. But they make wonderful garden plants because the beautiful leaves last long after the flowers have stopped.

The flowers rise up on a single long stock. And you can expect 2 to 5 blooms on one stock.

There are also different species of this particular daffodil. Depending on which one you have they can be either deciduous (dormant in winter) or evergreen.

You can do a quick search on google to find planting and growing information about this Peruvian Daffodil.

And finally looking at the botanical name of this flower we are indeed looking at a Daffodil and not a lily at all. Botanical name of daffodils are narcissus. The botanical name of Peruvian Daffodils also contain narciss... Different species may vary in how this name ends.

One example is hymenoeallis narcissfloma

Thank you Steve and Lisa for submitting this question and the excellent picture. Thanks to whoever answered for uncovering this truly surprising and beautiful flower.
