We learned a sad lesson with the mallard ducks in our neighborhood. We had neighbors who liked to feed the ducks and it was fun to watch them waddle up the block to get their corn.
We missed our visitors when these neighbors moved so we took up the innocent habit of feeding the ducks ourselves. They would frequent our patio on almost a daily basis.
There were two in particular that would check to make sure we had put out their morning food. Our cat would lay at the door and watch them eat. They were too big for her to handle.
Then one day on our return from taking mallard duck pictures in the park, we found a female dead in the yard. We were so confused as to what would have done such a terrible thing. My husband picked up the bird and cleaned all traces to discourage any unwanted wildlife.
That evening we looked out our window to see the hawk that had killed the poor duck. He came back for his dinner. I got a picture of him perched on the chimney of our neighbor's house. Because of this we stopped feeding the mallard ducks. If you would like to see the hawk be sure and check out my Hawk Pictures page.
The Mallard is a common and widespread dabbling duck which breeds throughout the temperate and sub-tropical areas of North America, Europe and Asia. It also frequents Central America and the Caribbean. It is probably the best-known of all ducks.
These mallard duck pictures were captured at the Naperville Riverwalk in Illinois. Naperville is a very popular town to visit in the summer. They have a wonderful art festival in the early summer with artists coming from all around to share their talents. It is a quaint little town I would highly recommend a visit.
The dabbling ducks are a group of eight genera and about 55 species of ducks, including some of the most familiar Northern Hemisphere species. They are in the duck, goose and swan family.
This group of ducks got its name because of their feeding habits. They feed mainly on vegetable matter by upending on the water surface, or grazing, and only rarely dive.
These ducks flock together in freshwater or estuaries. These birds are strong fliers and northern species are highly migratory. Compared to other types of ducks, their legs are placed more towards the centre of their bodies. They walk well on land, and some species feed terrestrially.
