They are common throughout North America blooming mid-summer in most locations. They are native to South Africa which is where the original name comes from.

Purple and white stripe is one of many colors and varieties you will find in petunias. Is it any wonder they brighten gardens in almost any neighborhood. And they make excellent free flower pictures. The first in the set is Chicory. This wildflower grows along roadsides and in fields all around North America.  You can often see it growing along roadsides from June to October.

You may know chicory as an herb. Roasted chicory roots are often used as an additive to coffee. You don't want too much though if you like coffee as a stimulant.

Next is a tiny blue flower that kind of resembles a clowns hat. It goes by two common names, bittersweet flower and deadly nightshade.

Do you suppose someone tried tasting the red berries this plant produces? This flower is a member of the tomato family

And finally here is beautiful yellow flower known as St. Johnswort. I think this is one of the prettiest of the free flower pictures available here.

You might know st. johnswort for it's mood elevating qualities as an herb remedy. But did you know that it is harmful to livestock?
