When you look at these pictures you can easily see where the name comes from. Don't they look like birds resting on a branch? They are also known as crane flowers. These pictures were taken in late October. It is one of those times when you have got to love California weather. While back east I know my family is wishing for nicer days, I know my daughter in California is thankful for the warmth and sunshine.
The Bird of Paradise Flower is native to South Africa. They do like a temperate climate. Their botanical name is Strelitzia reginae. You can find an excellent article about these flowers on Wikipedia.
